Download Press ReleaseDufry is taking this initiative by supporting SOS Children's Villages with the Program “Dufry – Global Support”.
Agadir, Morocco:
The fifth SOS Children’s Village in Agadir is well integrated in an urban setting. Construction of SOS Children’s Village Agadir started in August 2007 and was finished in autumn 2008.
SOS Children's Village Agadir consists of four buildings with three stories each and can accommodate up to 126 children. It has 14 family apartments, an administration area, a guesthouse and storage facilities. Built on a site of 0.86 hectares, it is located in the centre of a residential area of the town with great infrastructure (various companies, a technical training school and a private school which is under construction). Thanks to this proximity, the children will be able to attend the schools of the city and they will easily integrate into the community. The city with its increasing amount of activity will offer to the young people many possibilities of training and employment, particularly in the tourist sector.
Dufry’s donation covers all expenses for foodstuff, medical cost and clothing at the favour of 100 children at SOS Children’s Village Agadir.
Battambang, Cambodia:
In Cambodia another successful project was added. The SOS-Kinderdorf International was asked by the Cambodian government to build an SOS Hermann Gmeiner School in Battambang, where the government provided a plot of land next to SOS Children's Village Battambang. The school was opened in 2009 and there are 12 classrooms with a capacity of up to 500 students both from the SOS Children's Village and its surroundings. The school also has three science laboratories (for physics, biology and chemistry), a computer and language lab, a music room, an arts and crafts room, a library and a multi-purpose hall for sports and school functions. It offers all three levels of school education in Cambodia: primary (1st to 6th form), secondary (7th to 9th form) and higher secondary (10th to 12th form). Like the other SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools of Cambodia, this school adheres to the government school education system, but also offers additional subjects. Children from poor families who live in the rural areas of Battambang province greatly profit from the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School.
With Dufry’s donation the personnel cost during one year, as for example teachers’ salaries Battambang Hermann Gmeiner School could be paid.
Dufry Social Center in Igarassu Brazil
The “Dufry-Social Center” opened in 2010 for the purpose to support SOS Children’s Villages in Igarassu, Brazil had been constructed due to the funding of Dufry. More than 600 infants, young children and mothers are benefitting from the services provided by the Dufry-Social Center. Dufry will continue to finance the running of the center and the training classes.
With the center’s programs, SOS Children’s Villages is supporting families and prevents child abandonment. Children are provided with counselling and basic education classes as well as with medical care, adults receive training. The center also provides a day-care.
Dufry has financed the running cost of the Social Center and will additionally go on financing the Social Center in the future with an additional channel. By installing Coin Collection boxes in various Dufry Shops all over the world and communicating Dufry’ s commitment, another step into including customers and partners in the sustainability process was created. Additionally Dufry has nominated the SOS Social Center Igarassu as one of the beneficiaries of this year’s “Great Travel Retail EDUCATHLON” by Moodie Report which will raise funds for children’s education worldwide.
